I have been offered a full scholarship-assistantship to grad school, and have also been accepted to another very renowned program (both in PA). Yet part of me would rather stay out here and struggle to make it at any cost. I know people are busy, plane tickets are expensive, etc. but seriously, I haven’t had 1 visitor in 2 years. California was not just another whim, another “phase” I was in. This is my life, and it means something to me. So why move back? Why sacrifice and compromise my entire life, the place where I finally feel at home and fit in after 30 years of never feeling that, just to live within driving distance of (some) people who would probably forget I existed if I didn’t send the first text/e-mail/call to them? It seems stupid to move back when everyone else has moved on. I did everything “they” said: get in shape, join the Army, go to college, work hard, get good grades, on and on. And what has it yielded? A year-long, fruitless, soul-crushing, heartbreaking, never-ending job search. I have applied to the Starbucks in my neighborhood 3 times, never even got a phone call. I’ve applied to be a janitor (with experience!), a retailer (Target, Gap, Old Navy, Dick’s, REI, even the evil WalMart), a temp (ManPower SD, Kelly Services), a barback, a waiter, an intern. Honestly, I stopped counting job applications after the first 75 I filled out - last March! I have worked part-time here and there, but sharing a car and being scheduled 5 hours a week was not exactly helping my fiancé and I build a foundation in a place where “cheap” houses start out at around $350,000.

My soul and spirit are broken. I failed at 1 dream and half-assed another. I moved out here to build something with the woman I love, and it has almost killed our relationship more than once. At what point do I give up? At what point do I quit and accept failure? So many people give up right before a breakthrough, but should I bankrupt myself and another person for the sake of a dream? Part of me says “yes.” We do only live one lifetime after all. If I were able to live my life out here, would I look back and regret it? If I move back to Pennsylvania, the answer to that is an obvious “yes.” On some level, even if I live a successful life and have a cul-de-sac and money and all of that nonsense we’re programmed to want, leaving California is a failure. Even if it isn’t to the other 6,999,999,999+ people on this Earth, leaving the West Coast is a failure to me. And isn’t that all that matters?
